INDIE / ROCK
WAX WAV formed in the fall of 2016 with Nick Palmer and Abe Koffenberger, formerly of Philadelphia Indie Rock mainstays The Danger O’s. Palmer had been writing Punk Rock songs with more straightforward lyrical themes, four of which were quickly released as the well-received “EP1” in 2017.
After recruiting keyboardist Lynna Stancato, formerly of The National Rifle and Bondage & Discipline, they began writing the follow up. As the new songs were nearing completion, their bassist and drummer both left, forcing them to record the 5-piece arrangements as a 3-piece. Koffenberger covered bass duties and Palmer got back behind the kit. The rhythm tracks were recorded live, with all guitars, keyboards and vocals being completed in a single 12-hour day.
The result, titled “EP2,” expands on the blueprint of “EP1.” The addition of Stancato’s synthesizer and harmony vocals elevate the sound above the more straightforward Punk style of the first EP, without sacrificing energy or bite. The lyrics continue to explore social and political themes through a lens of hope and action.
In 2019, a new lineup has been solidified with Eric Zrinsky and Alex Brown, both also of Philadelphia Indie Rock favorites goodnight/goodluck. The tight new rhythm section allows room for guitar heroics and lush synth pads to fill the room, on top of which sit vocal harmonies that can swing from snarling Punk to dreamy Shoegaze.
